A nationally noteworthy travel experience—and a travel story—is

as close as the Boone Area High Country of North Carolina.

This is a region of outstanding national significance. The East’s highest mountains provide a surprising Southern climate of cool summers and snowy winters. A long list of outdoor options make the Boone Area a nationally recognized location for the outdoor adventure lifestyle. Factor in nationally known travel attractions and events, great restaurants, distinctive shopping—not to mention the Blue Ridge Parkway, the most popular unit of the national park system—and the Boone Area is never out of season.

That means right now is a great time to come to—or cover—the Boone Area.

The Holidays are on the way! The wintry atmosphere of the Boone Area fits right in with a Thanksgiving or Christmas vacation. You can join the Choose & Cut Christmas tree tradition and take some early runs on the slopes—often on the same day.

Skiing is big in the Boone Area. It's well worth a look ahead to plan for your media outlet.

Whether you want to feature downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snow tubing or sledding, or even winter hiking—it’s all here. We’re happy to help you find the photos, places, and people to communicate the excitement of winter.

Story ideas abound—with “national significance” as your news peg.

Appalachian Ski Mtn. is 50 years old in early December of 2012! January 2012—National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month—starts the celebration of App's half-century of skiing.

—The Boone Area has the East’s highest ski resort and town, flanked by spectacular summits that net more snow than Buffalo, New York.

—The Boone Area’s three ski resorts are the South’s biggest cluster of ski facilities, with more-than-mile-long runs and terrain parks for snowboarders and skiers.

—The area also includes the biggest snow tubing resort and winter zipline in Eastern America, snow tubing at three ski resorts, plus snowy sled hills on places like the Blue Ridge Parkway.

—Nordic, or cross country, skiing, winter hiking and snowshoeing, all abound on the frequently snow-covered trails and peaks of the Boone Area.
